Securing the Web with Elliptic Curve Cryptography. Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) is emerging as an attractive public-key cryptosystem for mobile/wireless environments. Compared to traditional cryptosystems like RSA, ECC offers equivalent security with smaller key sizes, which results in faster computations, lower power consumption, as well as memory and bandwidth savings. This is especially useful for mobile devices which are typically limited in terms of their CPU, power and network connectivity. Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) has recently been endorsed by the US government. more>

Software as a Service Tutorial SaaS Market ERP Servers: In this letter, I plan to turn my attention to software as a service (SaaS) — an exciting delivery model for software. In the most basic terms, SaaS involves delivering and receiving software as bytes over the Internet instead of buying and installing software locally as bits. Given the recent hoopla over SaaS, it is no exaggeration to say that it has been a big hit in many areas. Many consumers use SaaS every day with services like Google, Yahoo!, and eBay, but now those services and many others in the ERP space are moving into the enterprise. In case there are still any SaaS doubters, let's take a moment to examine some of the numbers. more>

Now it's all about Web 2.0, and a second generation of rich, dynamic Web services built on secure open standards that enable sharing, participation, and collaboration while delivering the extreme performance and massive throughput demanded by global proliferation of the Internet. more>
Data Center Model Blade Server Markets Explained: The Sun Blade 8000 Modular System is poised to bring blade efficiencies to new applications. It is no secret that the blade server market has witnessed dramatic growth. As businesses struggle to increase processing power within existing data center space, blades have witnessed a growing share of server markets — especially in the Web and light-application tiers. Aside from the anecdotal evidence, IDC estimates that blade servers will grow at a cumulative rate of 42.7 percent between 2006 and 2010 — achieving a 25 percent share of the entire market by that time frame. Still, despite the impressive figures, today's blades are largely relegated to niche applications within the data center. Due to design compromises that curtail processing power, I/O throughput, and on-board memory, blades are currently limited in deployment options and best suited for the Web and light-application tiers. With the introduction of revolutionary new modular technology, Sun has broken through this barrier into areas previously dominated by rackmount servers, including heavy application and database serving. more>

Sample Business Continuity Plan Disaster Recovery Documentation: Disasters happen, even more so today than ever before. Before the turn of the century, organizations focused on preventing and avoiding environmental disasters such as fires or floods. And, much like businesses and people acquire insurance policies against the chance of fire and other disasters on capital assets such as buildings and automobiles, IT departments typically implement some kind of insurance in the form of redundancy to help applications recover from disasters. However, in the 21st century, disasters have expanded to include terrorist attacks, strings of hurricanes, extensive power grid failures, network threats such as worms and hackers, and business events such as mergers and acquisitions — forcing IT managers to change their focus from avoiding a possible disaster to recovering from an inevitable one. And these days, every minute it takes to recover can cost the business or organization in terms of lost sales and customers. Sun Java™ Availability Suite can help by enabling application and data access continuity across unlimited distance. Learn about disaster recovery and business continuity. more>
Online Data Storage Data Mining Knowledge Management: Adding identity intelligence to information lifecycle management. It's Bill Vass back with another letter. I turn my attention to information lifecycle management (ILM). In a word: storage. Business Merger and Acquisition Software Integration Plan: It happens all the time. These are but a couple of examples of the challenges posed by systems integration. Learn about the challenges and issues of business mergers and acquisitions including legacy system integration and software integration. more>
Characteristics and Advantages of Thin Client Server Based Networks: Achieving Server/Desktop Flexibility Using server-based computing to drive interoperability in heterogeneous IT environments. For as long as there have been servers and clients, there has been debate about how much power should be granted to each constituent. On one hand, server proponents argue that manageability and security can be improved by taking power from the desktop and granting it to the network. Meanwhile, client advocates protest that some applications require local horsepower and certain users need to access applications when disconnected from the network. And they point out that most enterprises require a mix of operating systems and computing devices — all of which may stymie efforts to move entirely to a server-based environment. more>

x64 Applications Computer Benchmark Test: By Bill Vass. I've been talking to a few CIOs at other companies and there seems to be some confusion about the server strategy here at Sun.
