Virtualization Goes Mainstream
Virtualization software hardware: For servers, hardware assistance from Intel® Virtualization Technology
adds flexibility and security to virtualization, which will facilitate mainstream
adoption in the data center. For client PCs, Intel Virtualization Technology
enables a new way of delivering solutions.
To enable virtualization solutions to be broadly deployed in mainstream enterprise environments, Intel is adding hardware assistance—called Intel Virtualization Technology—to all its product lines. For servers, Intel Virtualization Technology makes system software called a virtual machine monitor (VMM) more robust and resilient. For desktops and laptops, Intel Virtualization Technology enables a new deployment model, called appliances, to be run in well-isolated virtual machines.
On both servers and clients, virtualization enables combinations of applications and operating systems to share the same hardware. Entirely independent operating environments can coexist, eliminating the potential that one might interfere with another. For example, applications on Microsoft Windows Server* 2003 and Red Hat Linux* can be deployed on the same physical server. "Virtualization enables new workload-handling capabilities both inside each system and across the data center,? says Fernando Martins, Intel virtualization strategy manager. "Intel Virtualization Technology has been embraced by the major virtualization solution providers, including VMware, Microsoft, and the Linux open source community."
Server virtualization
On Intel® architecture–based servers, virtualization is transforming the way many IT organizations provision and manage their data centers. VMMs from VMware, Microsoft, and others have demonstrated compelling rapid paybacks.
