Tackling Some of the Biggest Challenges Facing IT
Challenges of IT management: Two new technologies help simplify enterprise computing, lower costs, and protect networked computing assets. "Intel is helping to lower the cost of IT management and provide new compelling capabilities for consumers and enterprises alike," says Pat Gelsinger General Manager and Senior Vice President Intel Digital Enterprise Group
Intel takes an end-to-end approach to helping resolve many of the issues
facing users of computers—from mobile PCs to desktops and servers. The previous issue of Intel® Software Insight discussed one of these capabilities—multi-core processing. Two more Intel® platform capabilities were introduced in 2005: Intel® Virtualization Technology and Intel® Active Management Technology (Intel® AMT). For servers, these integrated technologies help IT lower costs and provide better service to users. For desktops, these technologies enable the concept of embedded IT appliances, which offer a whole new set of capabilities and benefits for PC users and new business opportunities for software companies.
IT managers know that the vast majority of IT budgets are spent on keeping systems running, leaving precious little funding for new technologies that can improve efficiency and competitiveness. For many, shrinking funding for innovation limits the ability to architect for the future and apply technology to solve new problems. At the same time, managing installed systems is very labor-intensive—a model that is not scalable or sustainable.
