In order to improve the facilities available to students and researchers, and advance its academic reputation, Queen’s University Belfast has initiated the migration of all administrative, academic and business applications to an Intel® Itanium® 2-based microarchitecture, running Microsoft SQL Server* 2005 on Microsoft Windows* 2003. After a test run by the Information Services directorate, the University invested in an Intel® technology-based platform and as a result, now enjoys improved efficiency, speed and performance in areas as diverse as high performance computing (HPC) and class scheduling.

Challenge

• Strengthen competitive position of University by increasing capacity of high performance computing (HPC) to accelerate and enhance scientific and other research
• Improve facilities and tools available to drive students’ academic success
• Increase visibility and understanding of student trends to guide managerial decision-making and maximise efficiency and time/cost savings for University administrators
