Executive Summary

To better identify IT software solutions that meet evolving internal customer needs and deliver the right products more quickly, Intel IT combined two complementary approaches to software development: Systemic Innovation and Extreme Programming. This approach enabled our globally dispersed development teams to work more efficiently, even across language barriers. They were also able to deliver to requirements while easily adapting to changing user needs.

By applying both Systemic Innovation and Extreme Programming to three projects, Intel IT was able to:

• Help customers realize that original requirements were incomplete, resulting in more effective final products
• Complete projects 20 percent faster, on average, than originally estimated
• Conduct rapid prototyping with frequent rounds of customer testing so that problems could be resolved early in the development process
• Discover and clearly communicate user needs and deliver a solution efficiently, even through language barriers
• Embrace changes as part of the solution instead of as challenges to be avoided
