Welcome to the Intel® Software Dispatch Subscription Program
Seen a turbocharged movie lately? In the future, multi-threading will play a key role in the most eye-popping performances, now that it has been incorporated into Pixar RenderMan* Pro Server 13.0 software the de facto industry standard for creating high-resolution animation and visual effects. RenderMan has starred behind the scenes in Disney/Pixar’s Cars and in each of the last 30 movies nominated for a Visual Effects Oscar*. To continue its winning streak, the RenderMan development team is constantly looking for new ways to increase performance and adopt the newest trends in computing to keep pace with the imaginative minds creating movies today.
Improved rendering requires new approach
Successful film production companies such as Pixar combine creativity and technology to drive bottom line results. Producing more realistic images with greater detail attracts a larger audience and boosts revenue for moviemakers. Faster rendering can give lighting designers more time to create even more realistic images. Since rendering is done near the end of the film production cycle, it is on the critical path for getting the movie released. After many years of optimizing rendering algorithms, adding visual detail while reducing rendering times today requires more compute power. Yet Pixar already had as many servers and storage devices in its data center as could realistically be powered and cooled. Every-thing pointed to the need for more processing speed from a given amount of real estate. That is what makes RenderMan a picture perfect example of reaping the value of multi-threading programming techniques and energy-efficient Intel multi-core processors.
