Advances in technology have enabled collaborative usage models that open new market opportunities
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology-in which voice travels over an IP-based network-is attracting the attention of consumers and businesses alike. The increasing availability of broadband access and the proliferation of fast, multi-core processors in desktops and laptops are helping eliminate the frequent dropouts and stutters that plagued early VoIP efforts. Today, VoIP is a viable, cost-effective alternative to traditional landlines and cell phones. VoIP is now poised to deliver its full potential as part of an integrated collection of multimedia communication tools.
Opportunities abound for participants in the VoIP market as demand rises rapidly for integrated services used for everything from social networking to business collaboration. In the consumer marketplace, VoIP-based residential gateways and client devices are rapidly multiplying, while subscriptions to VoIP services are increasing. Research firm IDC anticipates that by 2010, 40 million Americans will subscribe to residential VoIP services.1 Infonetics predicts that a combined USD 120 billion will be spent on VoIP services between 2005 and 2009 in North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific.
