Georgia Tech Takes a Parallel Path

Communicating the concepts and possibilities of multi-core processing and parallel computing starts in our educational institutions. As parallelism becomes the definitive paradigm in the computer world, technology education leader Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), in affiliation with Intel, is taking the necessary steps to equip their students with the knowledge and skills to succeed as computer scientists, system architects, and programmers.

"The change to multi-core means a re-emphasis on concurrency and parallelism," says Professor Karsten Schwan, College of Computing (CoC), Georgia Tech. "Since processors will be parallel, like the multi-core chips from Intel, we have to start educating and thinking in terms of parallel. It’s an interesting challenge for us to educate students in that direction. Whether they build gaming applications, vision applications, robotics applications, or traditional applications in the high-performance domain, they have to always think parallel. That renewed emphasis in understanding parallelism is important to impart to our students."

The Intel® Higher Education Program is coordinating the initiative to bring greater understanding of parallel computing to students, a global effort that is actively transforming the landscape of technology education. The ultimate goal is to assist faculties in developing relevant coursework and aiding students in their mastery of emerging technologies. Georgia Tech’s well-deserved reputation for advancing academic research and providing an exceptional technology curriculum complements Intel’s role as a technology enabler and industry leader. The university also fosters a strong entrepreneurial spirit that unites industry and university endeavors and helps ensure students have the academic foundation to thrive in the 21st century economy.
