Outdoor Wireless Networks with RFID Technology
Taking real-time online data capture and tracking where they have never gone before
Rapid advances in wireless technology have led to an exciting breakthrough for businesses, governments and other organizations that conduct operations outdoors where cabling is often not an option—an easily deployable wireless voice, video and data network.

This outdoor broadband wireless network with radio frequency identification (RFID) technology was developed jointly by wireless experts at Intel® Solution Services, Acer Computer Australia Pty Ltd, Airspan Networks, APC and D-Link. With a high-speed broadband wireless backbone (similar to today’s WiMAX capabilities) and Wi-Fi access overlay, it is flexible enough to meet the demanding requirements of an outdoor venue, portable enough to be installed in a new setting in just a couple days and able to work in environments where there may be potential interference from other radio or electromagnetic devices.

Outdoor wireless network extends the reach of RFID technology
One of the network’s most intriguing innovations is the ability to bring advanced RFID product and shipment tracking systems into both permanent and temporary outdoor venues.

For years, RFID tags and readers enhanced efficiencies in supply chain management, improved inventory visibility and improved transaction accuracy. In most cases, however, these systems were limited to relatively confined areas such as warehouses, factory floors and shipping docks.

Now, advances in RFID technology are enabling tracking systems to deliver additional value. Today’s RFID readers can detect active tags ten meters away, speeding and simplifying the management process. And active tags are smaller, thinner, lighter and only a fraction of the cost they were just a couple of years ago.

Intel Solution Services consultants—with their expertise in infrastructure design and Intel technology—can help RFID systems go where they have never gone before, from fairgrounds to film sets on location. Now that active RFID tags are becoming as small, thin and light as personal badges, many organizations are using RFID to track the movement of vehicles, equipment and people in these varied settings.

On the horizon: Wireless sensor networks
In addition to today’s wireless networking solutions, Intel is keeping its eye on the cusp of wireless technology. Forthcoming wireless sensor networks use radio frequency–based technology to instantaneously and collaboratively collect and deliver environmental data such as temperature, humidity, air pressure and vibration. In conjunction with audio- and video-capturing devices such as video cameras and microphones, this new flexibility in where and how environmental information is gathered and distributed has the potential to enrich a variety of outdoor events. Through multimedia and enhanced information, wireless sensor networks hold the potential to enhance experiences for on-site and remote spectators alike.
