The corporate appetite for collecting, organizing and leveraging data continues to grow unabated. The related problems of increased solution cost, ungainly database growth and piecemeal integration of information continue to make the top ten lists of IT professionals. Meanwhile, commercial database solutions are controlled by an oligopoly that has little desire to address the high costs to the user and, in fact, continues to use revenue from database sales to fund development of adjunct solutions.

Where to turn? Open source seems like a logical place. Yet, most open source solutions lack the enterprise-class capabilities that are required by mission-critical applications. PostgreSQL has these capabilities, but still requires a skilled IT staff that has the fortitude and expertise to install and support the product. Besides, introducing a new RDBMS into an existing environment requires integration and migration of information and applications, something for which few IT departments have the money, time or stomach.

EnterpriseDB Corporation addresses these challenges with EnterpriseDB Advanced Server 8.1. Advanced Server 8.1 is a true enterprise-class database that is based on proven open source technology and commercially supported. It is also the first and only database to deliver broad compatibility features that allow many applications written for proprietary databases such as Oracle to run without modification.

Data Storage Needs Continue to Grow

IDC estimates that the volume of corporate data grows at an astonishing 42% per year, effectively doubling enterprise data capacity requirements every 2 years. This data is then parsed and evaluated more times than ever before, as we try to gain competitive advantage by knowing more about our market, customers and products. In fact, enterprises now spend more than $5.5 billion annually on business intelligence software and $1 billion annually on ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) software, showing a large and increasing budget for software used to comb through data and extract information from it.
